New Provincial guidelines on masks usage

Changes to mask guidelines in schools

Our position, since the initial response to COVID-19 in March of 2020, has been to follow the guidance and directives of the provincial government, specifically that of the Ministries of Health and Education.

Their public health guidance has changed, and we have responded to these changes by enacting the following:

Starting Monday, February 14:

  • There will be no mask requirement for students, of any age, inside our school sites or on our buses.
  • Employees, contractors, visitors, volunteers, and practicum students will continue to wear a mask. Adults visiting our school sites will be required to continue to wear a mask.
  • Masks may still be required for students 12 and older in public spaces, including on field trips and in the community.
  • Capacity limits for tournaments and events attended by less than 500 people are removed.

Starting Tuesday, March 1, pending a continued decline in hospitalizations:

  • All mask requirements, for all, will end.
  • All capacity limits are removed for events of any size.

Enhanced safety measures will remain. This includes cohorting, increased custodial (cleaning), personal protective equipment and masks available on site, and frequent hand washing.

Periods of adjustment are, as they always have been, moments that demonstrate our collective patience and resilience. We anticipate this pivot/transitionary time to be no different. As we implement and adjust to these new guidelines, the needs and perspectives of our community—and our students—will be top of mind.

For some, the loss of these health measures can cause fear, anxiety, and concern. It is the responsibility of all of us to respect the feelings and choices people make in response to their personal comfort, which may include continuing to socially distance or wear a mask. We implore our school community to be respectful of the individual choices made by employees, families, and students in our schools. Nurturing a safe and caring learning environment is our work.

We thank you for your engagement and cooperation and for your continued engagement as a stakeholder in education.
