ART PROFESSIONAL STUDIO

This is an enrichment program that is very demanding of students. Each successive course level will require greater responsibility and refinement of skills.

Students should have a(n):

  • Strong sense of responsibility, work ethic, enthusiasm, and dependability
  • Very strong technical ability and understanding in a variety of media and technical skills
  • Ability to work well with others and to help other students with artistic hurdles
  • Strong desire to delve deeper into the professional experiences of an artist


Art 15 Professional Studio (LDC1441)

Credits: 5

Prerequisite: 80% Average in Art 30 & Art 11 or Art 31, plus a recommendation from a Visual Arts Instructor at ESFCHS/AHSFA

Required for: Art 25 Professional Studio

This course encourages the student to study, apply, and be engaged in the following:

  • An introduction to a variety of professional artist activities
  • Mentoring other high school artists, advanced thematic and conceptual/technical art making in the development of a professional portfolio, studio management, development of aesthetic and interpretive judgment skills and art criticism
  • Broadening and deepening knowledge of professional art experiences
  • Being adept at constructing conceptual artworks of their own design
  • Production of 5 (five) artworks in addition to their other responsibilities
  • Participation in and facilitation of Sketchbook activities
  • Beginning to build their portfolio including Artist Resume and documentation of their work


Art 25 Professional Studio (LDC2441)

Credits: 5

Prerequisite: Art 15 Professional Studio plus a recommendation from a Visual Arts Instructor at ESFCHS/AHSFA

Required for: Art 35 Professional Studio

The objective of this course is to broaden and deepen student knowledge of professional art experiences. This course encourages the student to study, apply, and be engaged in the following:

  • Building on the skills and professional visual arts activities the student experienced in Art 15
  • Mentoring elementary and junior high school artists, show and exhibition management, refinement of aesthetic and interpretive judgment skills and art criticism
  • Acting as a professional curator of student shows and/or exhibitions
  • Being highly adept at constructing conceptual artworks of their own design
  • Participation in and facilitation of Sketchbook activities
  • Continuation of portfolio development
  • Extending art making, producing 5 (five) artworks in addition to their other responsibilities; for these artworks, students will choose one of the following options:
  • In depth artistic exploration of the self; the many personal emotions and experiences that have been the building blocks for the whole person that they are today
  • Personal statement on a current social issue; the student must present a visual essay that depicts or vividly describes their opinion on the subject matter of their choosing
  • Visual exploration in aesthetics; artists will choose a specific media or subject matter and develop a series of related images that explore and push the boundaries of their technical abilities


Art 35 Professional Studio

Credits: 5 Course code: LDC3441

Prerequisite: Art 25 plus a recommendation from a Visual Arts Instructor at ESFCHS/AHSFA

This advanced course encourages students to study, apply, and be engaged in the following:

  • Building on the skills and professional visual artist activities the student experienced in Art 15 and Art 25
  • Participating in the role of developer, supervisor, and coordinator of the mentoring programs; mentoring other artists in our school community; lecturing on art criticism, art history, and conduct a presentation as a guest artist
  • Culmination of students’ advanced art making skills and techniques through the creation of 5 (five) artworks based on artistic inquiry (or research) as they explore aesthetic phenomenology; this qualitative research methodology specific to artists allows students to conduct original research; students will advance the development of aesthetic and interpretive judgment skills as part of the research process
  • Presenting a professional portfolio as course culminating activity
