ACCA YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS
Age Range - Pre-teen to 18
The Alberta Community and Co-operative Association youth leadership program offers an opportunity to develop confidence and leadership through education, friendship, discovery, adventure, recreation, and teamwork. These 7-day programs take place near Nordegg, Alberta.

The AP Program recognizes high school students who have demonstrated outstanding college-level achievement through AP courses and exams with the AP Scholar Awards. Although there is no monetary award, each award-winning student receives a certificate which is acknowledged on any AP score report that is sent to colleges after the award has been conferred.
AP Scholar Awards are added to students’ online score reports in late August. If you earned an award, you will be notified by email. Award certificates are sent by mail in September.
BRAIN SCIENCE DAY
Age Range - high school
Interested in Neuroscience? This event is open to high school students who show an interest in pursuing a career in the neurological and mental health fields. Students will visit a number of research labs, anatomy labs, clinical units, and the Seaman Family MRI Centre, helping students with career options within these areas. Students are nominated by their teachers and space is very limited so apply early.

CALGARY BRAIN BEE COMPETITION

Interested in Neuroscience? High School Students are invited to participate in this international competition hosted by the Hotchkiss Brain Institute. These live Q&A competitions test the neuroscience knowledge of other students from around the world. The winner of the Calgary Brain Bee will receive an expense-paid trip to CIHR Canadian National Brain Bee in May.
CALGARY FIRE CADET PROGRAM
An 18-month program offered evenings by trained fire professionals. 20 cadets are selected each fall. Learn valuable life skills while exploring the exciting and challenging opportunities of a firefighting career. Experience both classroom and hands-on learning.
Scholarships are available to first-year and graduating cadets.
CALGARY JUNIOR POLICE ACADEMY
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a police officer? The Alberta Royal Canadian Mounted Police in partnership with the RCMP Depot Training Academy in Regina is hosting sixteen students from all over Alberta for one week. Selection is based on student’s academic achievement, Canadian citizenship, and interest in a career in policing.
Learn what it’s like to be a police officer-in-training through activities and observation of activities including, drill, driver simulator training, firearms, police officer scenarios, a tour of the training facility, RCMP museum, and much more! Interact with Police Officer’s from many different units within the RCMP, which will allow you to obtain a better understanding of what life would be like as a Police Officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police!

CANADIAN GENE CURE FOUNDATION

Gene Researcher for a Week (GRFAW) program is your opportunity to gain insight into the world of genetic diseases through a mentorship in one of Canada’s top genetic labs. This program is designed to provide a learning experience for students that have not had extensive lab experience from other programs or work experience opportunities.
Participants can learn how genes cause human genetic disorders and how top scientists translate these findings into treatments and cures for genetic diseases. In this program you will participate in the activities in the lab with as much hands on experience as possible(*). The GRFAW mentoring program is a great opportunity to learn about human genetics research and connect with the scientific community.
Essay and teacher letter reference required.
Up to 35% of the selected applicants may be placed outside of their own city and even province.
It is the Canadian Gene Cure Foundation’s goal that no eligible student should be denied access to the program for financial reasons. CGCF will endeavor to keep costs down for participants by placing them in labs closest to their home location. In cases of financial hardship, where travel is required, CGCF will endeavor to help students raise the required funds through program sponsors or other means.

FORUM FOR YOUNG CANADIANS

This is a one-week youth workshop in Ottawa for 120 lucky students per session (3 sessions/year) who are interested in Canadian politics and public affairs, and seeing what running the country looks like up close. It’s also bout learning how to collaborate, share ideas, and turn ideas into real community action. If you have something to say, say it here. Be a Voice. Fee includes accommodations, travel, and some meals. Bursaries are available for qualifying students. Think about looking for community sponsorships.
HELIX SUMMER SCIENCE INSTITUTE
Age Range - Grade 9 - 12
York University Helix is a high school enrichment program in science and mathematics for high performing students. Helix consists of a series of week-long non-credit courses which highlight specific research strengths within the Faculty of Science. Financial assistance is available.
HERITAGE YOUTH SUMMER RESEARCH
Age Range - Grade 11
HYRS is an intensive 6-week, paid (stipend) summer science program where 45 students participate in health-related scientific research labs and research centers at one of three campuses: U of A, U of C, and U of L. Students must have at minimum 85% standing in Math and Sciences.
JUNIOR FOREST RANGERS
Age Range - 16 - 18
This program is an exciting 7-week summer job that will expose you to unique work, educational, and life experiences. Learn about the science of wildfire and other forest management principles while living and working in the great outdoors! This opportunity will give you a chance to find out about career options, an opportunity to gain valuable skills, and make new friends.

Katimavik is Canada’s premier national youth learning through volunteer service organization. Saint George’s University offers an opportunity of a lifetime for students interested in the fields of medicine or veterinary medicine. This 10-day program balances academics with extracurricular activities selected to highlight the culture and beauty of Grenada, West Indies. Qualifying participants will receive college credit through the School of Arts and Sciences.
Fees include accommodations, transportation on the island, all meals, medical instruction, and field trips. Airfare and the optional scuba dive expenses are not included. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and a completed application with deposit payment is required to reserve your spot.

SHAD

SHAD is a registered Canadian charity that empowers exceptional high school students to recognize their own capabilities and envision their extraordinary potential as tomorrow’s leaders and change makers.
Each year, SHAD provides the opportunity for 600+ students from across Canada and internationally to attend a month-long summer program, in-residence at one of 12 Canadian host universities, focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). SPEAK OUT CONFERENCE

200 students from across Alberta unite for a 3-day event to explore and provide meaningful feedback on key issues and initiatives to help shape the province’s education system, and connect with Alberta Education representatives and other students. Students with different backgrounds, opinions, and experiences will have the opportunity to provide their opinions and input on programs and products that the Ministry is currently addressing.

Students are invited to talk about their educational experience, including learning styles, what works for them, and what they would like to see happen in schools.
At a Speak Out Forum, students are asked four questions:

- What is holding you back from learning at your best?
- What actions can ADULTS take to improve how education looks and feels?
- What actions can STUDENTS take to improve how education looks and feels?

The Minister’s Student Advisory Council consists of 28 youth, charged with exploring ways to improve education in Alberta, and act as ambassadors of Speak Out within their schools and communities. Final approval of Council members rests with the Minister of education.
