Welcome to our New Principal and Vice Principal

We are excited to welcome Ms Sherry Opas as the Principal and Mr David Taylor as the Vice Principal of Westmount School beginning in August 2022.

As the current Vice Principal, Ms. Opas demonstrates a deep commitment to the learning needs of students, the faculty, and the community in her school leadership.  

Sherry is an experienced school and system-level leader and an accomplished teacher who develops positive relationships with all members of her school community. Ms. Opas sets high expectations for herself, her students and her team with a focus on student success in their learning within an inclusive environment. 

Sherry’s school and system leadership over 16 years include diverse roles as behaviour learning facilitator, student services coordinator, learning support coordinator and vice-principal. Ms. Opas holds her Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary and her Master of Education (School Administration) from Gonzaga University. She also holds her Alberta Education Leadership Quality Standard certification.

As she transitions into the principalship, Sherry provides the following insights: “I am excited to continue to work with the staff, parents, students, and community members of Westmount School in the capacity of principal providing our students authentic, innovative, and worthwhile learning experiences. I am proud to be part of this community where there are diverse opportunities for all children/students to be successful in a safe, inclusive, and caring environment.”

Mr Taylor

David brings teaching and leadership experience across all grades K-12 as he joins Ms. Sherry Opas (Principal) on the school leadership team. David is currently Vice Principal of Cayley School. 

Strong instructional leadership and inclusive practices inform David’s leadership. As an accomplished numeracy educator, David also sets high expectations for students and staff in mathematics education. With a focus on developing healthy relationships through a culture of belonging, engaging all learners through universal design, and maintaining a commitment to a continuum of support, David understands all students can have success. 

Mr. Taylor holds his Bachelor of Communication and Culture, University of Calgary, Bachelor of Education, University of Calgary, and Master of Education, from Gonzaga University. David also holds in good standing his provincial Leadership Quality Standard credential. 

As he prepares to join the team at Westmount School, David shares, “To become a part of an amazing school such as Westmount School is quite exciting.  I look forward to continuing my journey this fall with such an incredible school community and am eager to meet and collaborate with the students and staff and families of Westmount.  I would like to extend the utmost gratitude and appreciation to the Cayley School community. The memories that I have been able to create for close to five years with so many students, staff, and parents will be treasured.”

Chris Fuzessy, our superintendent, provides, “I offer congratulations and best wishes to Mr. Taylor on his upcoming appointment as vice principal at Westmount School beginning in the 2022-2023 school year. Mr. Taylor’s experience and expertise in leading learning from K to 12 will be a great asset to the Westmount School team and community.
