Vertical Farming Initiative

Vertical Farming Initiative

OHS Vertical Farming InitiativeIMG_0593.jpg

Our unique program we call the Vertical Farm Initiative grows herbs and micro-greens within a  40 foot sea-can that was converted into a fully sustainable indoor growing unit that can be used year round.

Indoor vertical farming can be defined as the practice of growing produce stacked one above another in a closed and controlled environment. By using growing shelves mounted vertically, it significantly reduces the amount of land space needed to grow plants compared to traditional farming methods. The ability to control soil (biochar), water, light and humidity enhances the growing cycle.

Solar%20Panels.jpg

Thank you to GooseCreek Contracting for installing the solar panels on our Vertical Farm last week, which will make the VFI much more sustainable. Previously, the Vertical Farm drew electricity directly from Oilfields School to operate the G2V lights, cooling system and automated water system. Now, the solar panels will produce enough energy to run the Vertical Farm and any excess power will feed back to the grid to reduce electrical costs for the division.

We are excited to continue to grow this project with your support. Funding for the solar panels has been provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada through the Local Food Infrastructure Fund (LFIF).

Our Story
We are a student driven program that produces Microgreens and Herbs in our Vertical Farm. Our products are sustainably grown and sold at local markets, restaurants and our school based market. We are striving to create a fully closed ecosystem that requires little to no inputs and has the smallest ecological footprint possible.

Our Team
The team lead of the organization and production processes is Cindy Watts. Leanne Campbell is sharing her marketing expertise with the team and is also involved in production.
Teaching of the Jr and Sr Vertical Farming classes is done by Mike Horembala.
The backbone of the program are the Jr. and Sr. Vertical Farm classes. Students blend their day with: class time learning about all aspects of the farm including the business side, time on task planting, harvesting and preparing soil for production.

Sales
We had a busy summer and early fall market season at the Millarville Farmer's Market. We are currently providing produce locally to several vendors. The students are doing market research to find additional outlets for our products.
We are researching moving to online purchases and local deliveries.
Join us Thursdays when school is in session to purchase Micro-greens and Herbs from 2-3:30
To enquire about purchases reach out to Cindy Watts. wattsc@fsd38.ab.ca
