What is a Learning Commons?

A Learning Commons is a common, or shared, learning space that is both physical and virtual.  A Learning Commons supports a student centered approach that emphasizes active and collaborative engagement and encourages the co-creation of knowledge by all learners. Both a physical and virtual space, the Learning Commons is a place where children are encouraged to learn and grow through a wide array of resources and hands on learning. We use Alberta Education’s competencies as our guide - critical thinking, problem solving, managing information, creativity and innovation, communication, collaboration, cultural and global citizenship and personal growth and well-being.

In this beautiful space, surrounded by books and the student’s work, we aim to provide a comfortable, and cozy, learning environment where children are encouraged to think, be risk takers, and to be readers.
