Criteria to move classes online
School divisions have been given authority by Alberta Education to responsibly shift a class or grade to short-term at-home learning as needed.
We evaluate each class, in each school, on a case-by-case basis. Decisions to transition between online and in-person learning are based on:
- the ability of a school to have staff available to operate in-person, in-school classes
- the rate of absenteeism from confirmed positive COVID results or isolation due to COVID-related symptoms
- available health data and guidance from Alberta Health Services
We have dedicated resources working with each school’s leadership daily to monitor and evaluate the best interest of our students and staff.
Where possible, we are communicating to parents about potential or likely shifts to allow families time to prepare and plan.
Parents/guardians can help by providing detailed information around the reasons for student absences. This is valuable information when considering case-by-case decisions to transition learning online. As always, the information parents/guardians provide is always voluntary and is kept confidential.
As before, shifting entire schools to online learning remains the role of Alberta Education.
