Kindness is a Power Play: Minds Matter & Okotoks Oilers Mental Health Game a Sold-Out Success

2026-MindsMatterHockey

The annual Minds Matter Mental Health Game, held in partnership with the Okotoks Oilers, took place on February 24, 2026 in front of a sold-out crowd! This marks a significant milestone for student wellness, community engagement, and mental health promotion in our region.

The school‑day hockey game brings together over 1,500 students, teachers, and community members in a high‑energy arena setting, using the excitement of sport to spark meaningful conversations about mental health. This year’s sold‑out crowd reflects growing enthusiasm for the event and a shared commitment to supporting student well-being in engaging, accessible ways.

Now in its fourth year, the Minds Matter Mental Health Game continues to combine on‑ice action with intentional learning moments focused on mental wellness. Throughout the game, students were encouraged to connect hockey concepts with everyday life skills, reinforcing positive mental health strategies they can use both in and out of the classroom. This year’s theme, “Kindness is a Power Play,” is aligned with this month's focus on kindness, and emphasizes the impact small, positive actions can have within our schools and communities.

The event is made possible through the ongoing collaboration between Minds Matter, the Okotoks Oilers, Recovery Alberta, and Foothills School Division, with the shared goal of reducing stigma and building resilience through proactive mental health education. Through the generosity and community-building spirit of the Okotoks Oilers, discounted student ticket prices ensured the experience remained inclusive and accessible, allowing students in grades 4 through 9 from across the division to participate in what has become one of the most anticipated school‑day events of the year.

The success of this sold‑out game highlights the strength of community partnerships and the importance of creating innovative opportunities to support student wellness. We extend our sincere thanks to Minds Matter, the Okotoks Oilers, school leaders, teachers, and support staff, FSD bus drivers, and all partners who contributed to making this incredible event possible.
