Principal at Meadow Ridge School Announces June 2026 Retirement

It has truly been a privilege to share this leadership journey alongside such exceptional colleagues—people who continually strive for the very best for our students, our communities, and for one another. 


Please join us in celebrating Ms. Debbie Payne, Principal at Meadow Ridge School, as she is approaching her well-deserved retirement, marking the conclusion of her remarkable 30-year career in teaching and school leadership this June. As a school leader, Ms. Payne has exemplified a commitment to students and their families, ensuring strong learning environments. She has shown a dedication to supporting her staff to succeed in their roles and consistently championed excellence in public education to ensure all students have access to high quality learning and opportunity to fulfil their potential.


Debbie joined the Foothills School Division in 2016 as Vice Principal at Turner Valley School having served as a teacher and school leader in High Prairie School Division. Ms. Payne accepted a 2-year secondment at Alberta Education from 2019-2021 before returning to join the administrative team at École Secondaire Highwood High School in 2021. In 2022 Debbie was appointed Principal of Turner Valley School before moving into her current position at Meadow Ridge.


Debbie’s mentorship of both current and aspiring school leaders has been highly valued throughout the Foothills School Division. Her exemplary instructional leadership, especially in advancing numeracy education, has contributed significantly to the continued growth and success of the division. As a dedicated ambassador for Foothills School Division, Debbie’s positive influence and commitment will be deeply missed by colleagues, students, and the wider community.


Ms. Payne holds a Bachelor of Education from Memorial University and a Master of Education from the University of Alberta.


As Debbie gets ready to retire in June, she offers these reflections: “I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Foothills School Division. It has truly been a privilege to share this leadership journey alongside such exceptional colleagues—people who continually strive for the very best for our students, our communities, and for one another. There is no doubt that I will spend some of my time in retirement reflecting on the wonderful memories made during my time with Foothills.”
