School board trustees are locally-elected representatives who play a critical role in shaping the future of public education.
New requirements for 2025 municipal election
Changes to the Local Authorities Elections Act require candidates to submit a notice of intent to appear on the official register of candidates before accepting campaign donations and incurring expenses. In addition, all candidates must complete the nomination process to appear on the ballot.
New provincial legislation means voters must register to vote in the upcoming 2025 municipal election - register online now with Elections Alberta.

Who is eligible to run for Trustee?
The Local Authorities Election Act, states that a person is eligible to be nominated as a candidate in any election under this Act if on nomination day the person:
- is eligible to vote (at least 18 years old)
- has been a resident of the local jurisdiction for 6 consecutive months immediately preceding nomination day, and
- is not otherwise ineligible or disqualified
It is the candidate’s responsibility to read and understand the legislation, or to seek appropriate legal or accounting advice from professionals as required. The candidate is responsible for ensuring that their campaign complies with all provincial laws.
Notice of Intent
A person can campaign and collect donations if they share their intent to run for office after January 1, 2025. These individuals are to submit the notice of intent to the school board by using documentation provided by the Government of Alberta.
Nominations
Candidates are required to submit a completed Nomination Form prior to 12:00 noon on September 22, 2025 (nomination day).
Nominations must be signed by at least five electors. These electors must be residents of the school board on the date they signed the form, and they must be eligible to vote in the election. As Foothills School Division has a ward system, the electors signing the nomination form must also be residents of the ward for which the candidate is being nominated.
Candidates can file their nomination papers with the returning officer by visiting Foothills School Division office at 129 4 Avenue, Suite 300, High River, Alberta T1V 1R3 during regular business hours. Although an appointment is not required, we encourage candidates to call 403-652-6502 and schedule an appointment time. A headshot can be provided upon submission of nomination forms for use of campaigning materials; please call in advance to coordinate.
Who is eligible to vote for Trustee?
A person is eligible to vote in an election held pursuant to this Act (Local Authorities Election Act section 47) if the person
- is at least 18 years old,
- is a Canadian citizen, and
- is a resident of the School Division on Election Day
- The Alberta Education Act section 74 (3) states - “Where a separate school district is established, an individual residing within the boundaries of the separate school district is a resident of the separate school division if the individual declares that the individual is of the same faith as those who established the separate school district, whether Protestant or Roman Catholic.”
