Retiring school leader to cap career with the ATA Council for School Leadership Distinguished Leadership Award

2026-ATAAward-Roberts

I am honoured to be recognized, and acknowledge that I work among many great leaders. This award is a reflection of not only my dedication to education, but also a local system that supports the achievement of leadership excellence.

Foothills School Division is proud to announce that the principal at École Secondaire Highwood High School has been selected as a recipient of the Alberta Teachers' Association Council for School Leadership (CSL) Distinguished Leadership Award. The provincial award recognizes school leaders who demonstrate exemplary leadership skills and contribute to the overall well-being of students, staff, and the wider community.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Mr. Roberts has made an enduring contribution to public education through his leadership across five school authorities in British Columbia and Alberta, including 24 years with the Foothills School Division. Since joining Foothills in 2002, he has served as Vice Principal at Oilfields School and as a school leader at Longview School, École Percy Pegler School, and École Secondaire Highwood High School, guiding each community with integrity, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to student success. In addition to instructional leadership, Dave has committed to coaching numerous school athletic opportunities including High School Rugby where he has positively impacted the whole school experience for learners.

Widely respected for his collaborative and student-centred approach, Mr. Roberts has played a pivotal role in fostering inclusive, welcoming school environments where both students and staff feel a strong sense of belonging. His emphasis on shared leadership, professional growth, and comprehensive student support has empowered teams to thrive and has left a lasting legacy that will continue to shape school communities well beyond his tenure.

Upon receiving the news of the award, Dave remarks, “I am honoured to be recognized, and acknowledge that I work among many great leaders. This award is a reflection of not only my dedication to education, but also a local system that supports the achievement of leadership excellence.”

The ATA CSL Distinguished Leadership Award is a fitting recognition of the impact of Mr. Roberts’ leadership and the values he has championed throughout his career. Foothills School Division looks forward to celebrating Mr. Roberts at the ATA recognition event in May, and at the FSD Board Recognition Lunch in June.
