ATA Labour Action Update: September 29, 2025

2025-ATA-LD-sept29

The below message was sent to all FSD families by email on September 29, 2025
Information within this message to families was updated October 2, 2025. Read here

Dear FSD Parents and Guardians,

The Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA), which represents teachers and school administrators across the province, have voted to reject the proposed agreement that was tabled September 27 to 29, 2025.

With this news we understand that the ATA, which includes all FSD teachers, principals, and vice-principals, can begin labour action in the form of a Strike starting at 12:01am on Monday, October 6, 2025, unless an agreement is ratified prior to that timeFor now, regularly scheduled operations and learning will continue this week.

During a strike, learning and extracurricular activities will be paused, and schools will be closed until the labour action is resolved. Programs such as on-site before and after school care and junior kindergarten will also be closed as we will not have the staffing or leadership in place to safeguard safety for all learners. As we have previously communicated, families will unfortunately need to arrange alternate care for their children to assure student wellness and well-being during labour action.

As we do not know the duration of which labour action may occur, pre-paid program, field trip, or other time-sensitive fees will be addressed as the labour action progresses or concludes. Your child will be asked to take home personal items such as indoor shoes, gym strip, jackets, etc. so they may be used in another capacity during the labour action.

We understand that labour action is concerning and a disruption to your family.   We are closely monitoring the situation and are committed to updating families as soon as information becomes available. Should the labour action end, or if we have important information to share with you, we will do so by email and post an update at our website. You can also find the latest updates on our ATA Labour Relations webpage (link).

We value the expertise and dedication of our teachers and all staff members. We remain hopeful the ATA and the provincial government can reach a negotiated settlement that supports all students, staff, and families. Thank you for your partnership in education. We also thank all our staff teams for their dedication and hard work to support student engagement, support, and success.

Sincerely,

Chris Fuzessy
